Music spotlight: Chris Bathgate

Recently featured on NPR's Tiny Desk Concert series, singer/songwriter Chris Bathgate instantly won me over (in spite of being from Ann Arbor, Michigan - Buckeye fans, you'll understand the importance of this!) His new album, Salt Year, debuted earlier in 2011and is his fourth album to date. The single from Salt Year, "No Silver" is easily my favorite. The relaxing beat, resemblant of Bon Iver meets Ryan Adams, puts my mind to ease any time of the day as a perfectly meditative and contemplative harmony. This guy has an incredible voice and the instrumental aspect to his music is pitch perfect.

NPR summed it up best:
"[Chris] invests his songs with warm, rustic beauty — aided by strings, slide guitars and other instruments of emotional devastation — that makes everything too pretty to function as a true downer."

My only criticism is that he hails from the hometown to the University of Michigan. For those of you who aren't familiar with the famous Midwest rivalry... Maybe it's for the best. But in case you're curious, take a look here.

What are your favorite singer/songwriters to listen to on a rainy day?
