What the world needs now

You are probably familiar with the song "What the World Needs Now is Love," something that I think speaks truthfully about what we all need in the world. Well the good news is, I think that the world has plenty of love, all over the place! Take a look at the following examples of "do gooders" that I came up with as today's Mood Lifters.

  • A Better LA - I went to a comedy show on Saturday night (thanks to one of my amazing friends who surprised me with tickets), and it turns out that the show was organized by Pete Carroll and proceeds went to a charity called "A Better LA." The organization trains volunteers to help teach people in the community about stopping violence, preventing violence, and engaging the community. From tickets alone they were able to raise nearly $1 million!! And that is no laughing matter! It's awesome to see celebrities get together for a cause and even better to see over 7,000 fans gather in support of the event.
  • Microgiving.Com - A man recently sold his multi-million dollar website (Advertising.Com) in favor of starting a new one, Microgiving.Com. Based on the concept of sites like Ebay or Craigslist, the site aims to connect donors (as the website calls it, "those who have") with recipients ("those in need.") Several causes are listed on the main home page under the Top Cause box, some of which include job loss, unexpected illness, loss of housing, and medical treatment. The site allows users to create a profile and identify people they can help, from as little as $1 donations. The concept is genius, and I applaud John Ferber, the founder of the website who left behind millions to be gained in the advertising business for something he felt was a greater good.
That's all I have for today, as I've run out of time and need to get back to homework! Anything unique that you've heard about lately? What are organizations or people that are "doing good" in the world?

  1. I love the microgiving.com site. There are a few people I know who have been out of work for a while and could really use the help. I'm going to pass this website along so they can look into it! Thanks for sharing....
